Behind him, I saw someone pacing in the cell at the end of the room. They were in darkness, but I didn’t need to get close to recognize Feuzen Taureus. When she heard Maesa call my name, the horned girl let out a squeal of excitement and then clapped a hand over her mouth.

The lone guard drew his sword, pointing it at me. The tip of the blade shuddered, and I could tell instantly that he was far more terrified than I was. He was just a boy, I realized. The guard might be armed and armored, but beneath the steel was a boy of barely fourteen or fifteen. The boy held the blade not like a weapon, but like a cross against a vampire, as if he were trying to ward me away rather than threaten me.

Cassandra stepped forward, reaching for her own sword, but I reached out and grabbed her shoulder. The knight turned to me, and I shook my head. Cassandra nodded, and let her sword sink back into its sheath.

“What’s your name?” I asked, holding up my hands to show I wasn’t a threat.

The young boy shivered. “P-Patroklos.” He stammered, in a surprisingly soft voice.

“Patroklos.” I repeated his name, and took a step forward. “I really suggest you put that down. The only person you’re likely to hurt with that is yourself.”

“You don’t know that!” The boy stepped back and swung the sword in the air, as if to threaten me. I… wasn’t exactly intimidated. Beside me, Persia looked at me and rolled her eyes, and she looked as if she were trying not to laugh.

I took another step forward, and Patroklos took another step back. I could see him sweating under his helmet. Now, I myself had to struggle not to laugh, as I took another step forward.

Patroklos took another step back, and came up against the bars of Feuzen’s cell. A moment later, the horned girl’s arms shot out, her left wrapping around the young boy’s neck, the other seizing his sword arm. Patroklos let out a high-pitched squeal and instantly dropped the sword. Clearly not a trained warrior. The king must be running severely low to hand a sword to this… boy? Yes, he was a boy… I was mostly sure, anyway.

“You don’t have nearly enough ambition to take on this guy.” Feuzen growled in the young boy’s ear, a savage grin from ear to ear. “Trust me, if I couldn’t do it, a little girl like you can’t even begin to try.”

The horned girl let go of Patroklos’s wrist and reached down to snatch the keys from the boy’s belt. A moment later, she let go of the young boy, pushing him toward me and began to unlock her cell.

Patroklos sank to his knees, sniffling softly. A moment later, he began to cry softly. Was he really as old as I’d thought he was? Honestly, I felt a bit guilty now. I exchanged an awkward look with Persia and Cassandra. “H-hey, calm down.
